Remények, szándékok és ígéretek a függő beszédben

Amikor egy szándékot, reményt vagy ígéretet idézünk, egy megfelelő idéző igét használunk, melyet egy olyan 'that' mellékmondat követ, amelyben vagy a 'would' szó szerepel, vagy egy 'to' főnévi igeneves mellékmondat. Ebben az esetben használt igék: hope, promise, threaten, guarantee és swear. Vedd figyelembe, hogy a 'that' szó nem kötelező amikor egy 'that' mellékmondatot használunk, amint ez az első példában látható.

"Give me the keys to the safe or I'll shoot you!" he shouted.	He threatened to shoot me if I didn't give him the keys to the safe. OR He threatened that he would shoot me if I didn't give him the keys to the safe.
"I will not tell anyone your secret" he said.	He swore that he would not tell anyone my secret. OR He swore not to tell anyone my secret.
